Makeology is a hands-on Maker Summit for
curriculum leaders, classroom educators, principals, and heads of schools who want to learn more about how to leverage the Making pedagogy and practices to deepen, enliven, and transform teaching and learning for their students.

Why Maker?
Schools need more learning by doing, making, tinkering, inventing, and engineering. The term 'Maker' refers to using a wide variety of hands-on activities (such as building, programming, Internet of Things, 3D printing, wearable technologies) to support academic learning and the development of a mindset that values playfulness and experimentation, growth and iteration, and collaboration and community.

Making and Tinkering is a powerful form of learning where students construct their own knowledge through hands-on thinking, making and doing. A Making and Tinkering mindset values playfulness and experimentation, iteration, collaboration and community engagement as ways of learning growing and connecting.

Learning through Making is deeply rooted in Educational Practice and theory. Empowered by increased access to technology and tools, Makers are equipped to learn adapt and create with others in our rapidly changing world.

Hands On Learning Institute
Making in the Classroom
Learning through Making is not new. It is deeply rooted in and driven by social constructivist learning pedagogies and practices going back to Dewey, Montessori, Vygotsky, Piaget, Freire, Papert, and others. On the other hand, emerging global trends such as a quest for authenticity, ubiquitous access to tools, and social networking platforms are driving the Maker Movement around the world. This hands on institute will provide an introduction to educators who want to develop understanding and practices for learning through Making in their classrooms.

In this strand, participants will:
  • Develop an understanding of pedagogies and global trends driving Making.
  • Learn to foster Maker mindsets and grow a Maker Culture at their school.
  • Experience learning through Making & Prototyping.
  • Assess and reflect on their own learning through Making.
  • Create a prototyping lesson for their classroom.

Workshop Leader
Kristopher Velez
Kristopher Velez, more commonly known as Linus, has been an avid gamer, tinkerer, maker, and programmer since childhood. Previously a video game developer, Linus fell in love with education while teaching game development to students at a summer camp. He followed this interest to the American School of Bombay where he researched and developed prototypes to test the impact Making & Tinkering has on student learning.

There he developed and taught two high school classes in Creative Coding and Making and has run multiple workshops on Video Game development, Robotics, prototyping and STEM-based curriculum for high school students. In addition, he developed Maker programs and student summits as well as worked with teachers across all divisions to integrate Making, Programming, and Game Development into their curriculum. Linus authored a book based on his research titled CodEd: Teaching Coding in the Classroom.

Currently, Linus heads Maker Learning at Consilience, bringing the passion, knowledge, and skills to support schools and teachers to implement learning through Making and build a Maker Culture in their unique contexts.
